This report examines the market in Germany for crawler dozers and loaders, a subject last covered by Off-Highway Research in 2013.  Germany continues to represent the largest single market in Europe for crawler dozers by some considerable margin, accounting for 37 per cent of total regional sales in 2015, although during the post-reunification boom in 1992 this figure was nearer 65 per cent.

Machines currently in operation in Germany range from the smallest 90 horsepower models, to those of over 800 horsepower manufactured by Caterpillar and Komatsu.  In practice, the majority of crawler dozers sold are in the 130-190 horsepower range.

The range of crawler loaders reviewed runs from models of 100 horsepower equipped with a 1.2 m3 bucket, to the larger types at 160-180 horsepower with buckets of 2.0-2.5 m3, and which are used in quarries and on large civil engineering contracts.  There is also a limited demand in Germany for crawler loaders over 200 horsepower.

The role of the crawler loader in Europe has steadily declined in importance during recent years, primarily as a result of advancing technical development of the wheeled loader and increasing use of the hydraulic excavator/dump truck combination.  The German market has been no exception to this trend and now lies some way behind the leading market France in terms of annual sales of the product.

There is now no domestic production of either crawler dozers or crawler loaders.  Production of crawler loaders at the Komatsu Hanomag factory in Hannover was halted in 1994, which was followed in 1996 by the termination of crawler dozer production.

The findings presented in this report are based on Off-Highway Research’s International Database, and on information collected during an interview programme in Germany conducted in November 2016 with all suppliers.
