This report concerns the market for agricultural tractors in Italy, and is an update on the subject which was last covered in the European Service in 2010. The country is still a major European producer of agricultural tractors, but the rationalisation of the farming industry, which has happened in the last decade, has had a mixed effect upon producers. Smaller manufacturers have been taken over, while the main suppliers have defended their power through acquisitions and more aggressive use of distribution, particularly overseas.
The products covered in this report include wheeled and crawler tractors ranging from small, 35 horsepower vineyard and orchard machines used in fruit growing areas, to heavy 500 horsepower crawler machines. Single axle walking tractors or power tillers, used to a large extent on small landholdings, are not part of this analysis.
All data in this report which refers to ‘agricultural tractors’ include wheeled and crawler tractors, although where possible the tables show the division between the two types. In Off-Highway Research’s International Database all Italian tractor data refers to the combined total of wheeled and crawler tractors.
The findings presented in this report are based on interviews with the major manufacturers and importers of tractors in the autumn of 2012. The Italian tractor trade association, Unacoma, supplies comprehensive information on registrations, which are the basis for the sales figures in this report. To obtain a more balanced view of the market place, the Off-Highway Research’s international database has also been extensively used.
