This report is an update of the Hitachi Construction Machinery profile that was first published by Off-Highway Research in May 2005. Hitachi Ltd began manufacturing rope shovels in Japan in 1949, and by 1965 it had launched the first Japanese hydraulic excavator, of its own design, the model UH03. The construction machinery division was established as an independent company on 1st October 1970 and was renamed Hitachi Construction Machinery Co. Ltd (HCM). This operation was to become the main driving force behind the company’s entry into the Chinese construction equipment market, and was the original foundation of the success that it has achieved today.
Today HCM is one of the world leaders in the construction equipment industry, with headquarters located in Tokyo, Japan and production facilities in Japan, Europe, North America and Asia. In China, HCM has a number of investments and the purpose of this report is to examine its construction equipment related operations in the country. For reasons of simplicity, the name Hitachi is used to refer to all affiliates of HCM in the country. After 20 years of operations in China, HCM has become a highly respected leading supplier with a product portfolio that includes crawler excavators, mini excavators, wheeled excavators, mobile cranes, dump trucks, and very large electric excavators.
