This report analyses the Chinese market for crawler dozers over the last five years, and is an update of the subject last covered in Off-Highway Research’s Chinese Service in May 2015. Crawler dozers operating in China range from the smallest 80 horsepower models to imported machines of over 800 horsepower, and are classified into three types of drive: mechanical drive, hydrodynamic (or hydraulic torque converter) drive and hydrostatic drive.
The mechanical drive machines are regarded as having outdated technology, but are still preferred by some old customers. The hydrodynamic models are most popular among manufacturers and customers at present, and these dominate demand. Hydrostatic dozers have not yet been well accepted by the market, but may well increase in popularity as a result of the marketing efforts of Caterpillar Qingzhou, Shantui and Xuanhua.
Crawler dozers are extensively used in transport infrastructure, construction, mining, agriculture and power plants, while light construction and specialist applications are markets that are yet to be fully developed. The Chinese crawler dozer market became the world’s largest during the period 2009-2011, but has now fallen behind that of the United States in the last five years.
The findings presented in this report are based on Off-Highway Research’s Chinese Database and on an interview programme undertaken in China with the industry’s leading manufacturers, importers and distributors during the first quarter of 2017.
