This report concerns the market for backhoe loaders in the United Kingdom, where they have traditionally been the favourite tool of general contractors for small excavation and loading tasks. Historically, the product has been developed from the adaptation of an agricultural or industrial tractor, to which has been added a front loader bucket of approximately 1.0 m3 capacity, and a rear hydraulic backhoe with a bucket of around 0.2 m3 capacity. Since the mid-1970s the backhoe loader has been built on a purpose-designed chassis, and transmissions have become more robust, offering advantages such as instant reversing.
This report covers machines with rigid and articulated frames, ranging from 25 to over 100 horsepower, but it only assesses the market for purpose-built backhoe loaders. It excludes industrial tractors, or tractor loaders to which a backhoe has been fitted.
The findings presented in the report are based on Off-Highway Research’s database, and on an interview programme which was undertaken with all domestic manufacturers and suppliers during June 2015. It is an update of Off-Highway Research’s last report on the subject last published in October 2012.
